Educational Needs
Educational Needs

Haven Nook School recognises the fundamental importance of building trust and strong relationships with students. We value young people for who they are and take the time to understand and support their unique aspirations, well-being and educational needs. In doing so, we create an environment of respect and belonging. Rather than considering them in isolation, we look at the bigger picture and use this to inform our work with them.

We take into consideration a young person’s journey to becoming part of our school.

Haven Nook works closely with parents, carers and other professionals to ensure a joined up approach and collaborative working relationship.

It is important to us that each young person’s voice is genuinely heard and used to shape the personalised provision that they receive during their time with us.

We see our school as a community and align with Bronfenbrenner’s educational theory.

Our universal provision consists of three key strands:

High-quality inclusive teaching

High-quality inclusive teaching for all which focuses on removing barriers to learning and supporting all young people to reach their full potential.

The Thrive Approach

The Thrive Approach, a Department for Education recognised programme which supports social and emotional health and well-being. Staff members receive Thrive Approach training and embed the key principles within their practice.

Speech, Language and Communication

Speech, Language and Communication needs are supported using the structured approach of Language for Learning.

In recognition of our students’ unique interests, needs and approaches to learning, we provide individualised provision plans and timetables for each young person on roll. These can include the following as required:

SMART Targets

Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-Based (SMART) targets.

Individualised Speech, Language and Communication Support

Individualised speech, language and communication support and interventions informed by our licenced Speech and Language Therapist.

Thrive Approach Action Plan

Targeted social, emotional and well-being support using a bespoke Thrive Approach Action Plan carried out by one of our Licenced Thrive Practitioners.

Therapeutic Support

Therapeutic Support – this can be in the form of 1-to-1 Thrive Approach support, peer group work, input from a well-being mentor and 1-to-1 counselling with one of our qualified psychotherapists.

We collaborate and work with a range of outside agencies, charities and professionals.

We signpost and refer to these external partners when required.

Our SEN Team has a wealth of experience and expertise from both educational and therapeutic backgrounds. We have high aspirations for all students and work collaboratively to enable them to access learning, achieve successful outcomes and work towards their longer term pathways to adulthood.
